BE DISCERNING WITH WHOM YOU TAKE ADVICE
Be Discerning with Whom You Take Advice
In matters of relationships, family, friendships, and professional circles, wisdom demands that you exercise caution regarding whom you allow to speak into your life. Not every voice, even those cloaked in familiarity or affection, carries intentions rooted in your well-being.
The Bible, in Ecclesiastes 7:21-22, offers a profound caution: “Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you.” In other words, when you make yourself overly available to every opinion, rumor, or unsolicited counsel, you risk entangling yourself in needless turmoil.
People often advise from the lens of their own experiences, insecurities, or hidden motives. Some speak out of a desire to soothe the guilt of past choices, seeking redemption through your decisions. Others project their fears, limitations, or ignorance onto you, masking uncertainty as guidance.
Listen less, observe more.
Actions speak with a clarity that words sometimes cannot match. Patterns of behavior reveal truth far better than grand declarations or flattering speech. Observe how people handle adversity, how they treat those who cannot offer them benefit, how consistent their values remain over time.
Consider these guiding principles:
✅ Discern motive: Before absorbing someone’s advice, reflect: What might they gain from steering me this way?
✅ Assess credibility: Has this person demonstrated wisdom, integrity, and success in the area on which they’re advising you?
✅ Check alignment: Does their counsel align with your values, your faith, and your long-term vision?
✅ Seek confirmation: Wise counsel is often affirmed through multiple trustworthy sources or through the quiet confirmation of your own intuition and faith.
✅ Observe actions: Words can be artfully constructed, but consistent actions rarely lie. Let deeds be the ultimate litmus test of authenticity.
Remember, your life’s journey is yours alone. It is precious, and the choices you make ripple out to shape your future. Guard your mind and heart. Listen, but weigh every word carefully. Seek divine guidance, reflect deeply, and trust that the right path will illuminate itself in time.
Speak less. Observe more. Choose wisely. And above all, stay true to your values and your purpose.
